We finally made the project list for the powder room on Sunday. And we picked out our paint colors: Martha’s “Pebble” an earthy, pinkish white for the walls and “Slipstream” a lovely steely blue-gray (not sure what I’m going to do with that yet, but it goes so well with the white and the marble that it must be in there, even if it’s just in accessories).
As of Sunday, the plan was to install the light fixture, and then I was going to sand and paint the walls before we replaced the floor.
We had a lot going on, so we didn’t intend to start work right away. But of course, I was too anxious to wait and we just started with something simple: ripping off the baseboard. That’s when our plans changed. Because when we removed the baseboard, we found mold. Lots of mold that the previous owners just painted over.
Now our bathroom looks like this:
Thankfully the mold was only on one wall. Since it happened to be the same wall with the lots of damage that I was going to have to patch up anyway, and we had lots of drywall leftover from drywalling our attic office, we decided to just take out the whole wall and replace it.
Surprisingly, this was actually the first wall I’ve ever gotten to tear down, and I was quite excited. If you haven’t demolished a wall yet, it is as fun as it looks. I had a lot of fun anyway. 🙂
Inside, we found a mousey graveyard and even more mold. And see that wire sticking up just above the first crossbeam on the left? Yeah, that was LIVE and just hanging out. Thanks electrician!
We’ve decided to stay home this Labor Day weekend and take advantage of two full days in a row to get some serious progress made in this little room. I should have some prettier and more interesting things to show you after that.
See how the ceiling is angled in there? I kind of like the irregularity of it, but currently the way the walls are yellow and the ceiling is white, it just looks odd, kind of like an accident. Any ideas on how to accentuate and make it look like a cool feature?
PS: In the mean time, I will finally get to re-finishing that lamp you all helped me with! 🙂

Autch about the mold. But good you had drywalling experience and found a place where to use the excess ones. The demolition looks exciting, I have never experienced one.
I don’t think the ceiling angle looks like a mistake. The angle is so big. Some horizontal stripes will accentuate the angle even more, but maybe that was not the style you were after.

My 2 cents worth – I think tract or recessed lighting up high would cast some beautiful light and shadows, accentuating the height.
